I made a stand to display air plants. I started with a scrap of 2x4 for the base. I used a metal rod that I salvaged from an old color laser printer. Then I added a stick which already had some tiny pieces of Spanish moss growing on it. The stick was from a local park, but I have similar ones in my own back yard. We bought the reddish air plant at a home improvement store, and the purple flowered one was from the Austin Home Show. I drilled a hole in the stick for the purple one and I made a bracket for the red one out of a piece of scrap wood. Many people hot glue their air plants but I didn't, so the plants can easily be removed for watering and to be more environmentally friendly. I can also water them with a spray bottle without removing them.
I found out that the Spanish moss (Tillandsia
Usneoides) is related to the other types of air plants which are also in the genus Tillandsia. If you don't live where Spanish moss grows or you want a more colorful type, you could buy them online. Here is an Amazon affiliate link to a search for Tillandsia: https://amzn.to/2TzxSV4
When my cousin Ella visited, she wanted to take home the cute balls of Spanish moss from our trees, but her mom wouldn't let her. I hope that she will be able to buy some other type to make a fairy garden because she likes fairies. Her dad even wrote a book for her, called Ella and Leo Save the Fairies.
